2022 Record Reviews: 01/22

Angered Wrecks - Beanie, Booze and R&R  LP  (Cardinal Fuzz/Feeding Tube)
Small town delinquent rock and roll from Fredericton NB circa 1981. Recorded with one microphone to two-track cassette recorder at their rented party house, the band runs through some choice proto-punk (Stooges, Alice Cooper), some contemporary stuff (Subhumans, Dead Kennedys) plus a couple of originals that would fit quite nicely on any KBD type comp. The band is potent and can swing with the best of them with the obvious highlights being the great sleazy vocals and the dexterity of the guitarist. Includes liner note insert. Recommended for Canadian punk history fanatics. (RA)

The Dickies - Live In Winnipeg 1982  LP  (Secret)
This is a vinyl version of a bootleg that has circulated for some time. Word on the street is that it was actually recorded in 1983 which makes us wonder who's in charge of the fact checking when licensing these releases? Anyway, back to the music at hand. The audio is definitely 1980's bootleg quality and we wish it could have been louder. The performance itself is stellar with the band firing on all cylinders (drummer Nicky Beat (ex-Weirdos) is particularly impressive). For Dickies completists only.  (RA)

The Dickies - Gary Glitter Get Away b/w I Wanna Hold Your Hand  7"  (Cleopatra)
This is a pleasant surprise. Really strong original song on the A-side that they've playing on stage for a few years. Melody, humour, bad taste and a nod to the Go-Go's are all here on display. The Beatles cover on the flip is quite good and is done close to the original speed as opposed to the usual Dickies orbital pace. Their final album is reportedly due later this year and if this single is any indication of its worth, it will be an essential purchase.  (RA)

The Viletones - Fleurs du Mal  LP  (Artifix)
For the uninitiated, the Viletones were at the forefront of the original Canadian punk scene. Led by Steven Leckie aka Nazi Dog, their sound was crude, simple and catchy as hell and would have been a lot more popular had they been from London or NYC. These tracks were recorded in early 1977 and first compiled onto the CD compilation A Taste of Honey back in 1994. A few vinyl bootlegs have appeared over the years, so the time was right for this legit release.  These 17 tracks have been remastered and repackaged with great graphics and tons of photos. Highly recommended.  (RA)

2021: A year in Review

Although this was another unbelievable year of no gigs and cancelled tours, a plethora new releases gave us solace and respite from these cursed times. Vinyl seems bigger than ever, but also continues to be prohibitively expensive. Pressing plants are being tied up for months manufacturing major label releases from the likes of Adele and Taylor Swift etc. This situation leaves all the indie stuff on the back burner creating a situation where a 12 month turnaround is not uncommon. WE see more CDR and cassette releases in the future for indie bands.

LOCAL RELEASES: Another healthy amount for this small town and its expats. Cheers to all.
